How are blood pool agents eliminated from the body?

Depending on the type of blood pool agent, excretion takes place via the reticulo-endothelial system (RES) or by glomerular excretion in the kidneys. The disadvantage of excretion via the RES is that contrast material remains in the spleen and liver for an extended period, which may reduce the quality of MR evaluation of these organs up to several days or weeks after injection of the contrast agent. In cases of impaired renal function, contrast agents that are normally excreted by the kidneys are either removed from the body more slowly or may have to be removed by intraperitoneal dialysis or hemodialysis.
